In today’s episode, AJ and Rory get together to do a debrief of the most salient points that Sally Hogshead made in her epic recent interview. Sally spoke about the value of positioning and differentiating oneself while sharing strategies and examples from her personal experience that show how this can be done. Rory and AJ were particularly struck by this idea that uniqueness is something that everybody already possesses. The implication is that becoming successful is not so much about being better than everybody else as much as nurturing the things that make a person who they are. Different aspects of this point are spoken about, such as being accessible but unique, being rich through being yourself, using uniqueness to trump the strengths of your competition, and finding a problem which only you can solve.

Rory and AJ end with one of Sally’s finest pieces of advice, which is that the world is not changed by people who ‘kind of’ care, but by those with an almost irrational level of passion. Each of us has that passion in us, so it is just a matter of finding it.

And don’t forget Sally is also giving you the opportunity to take her test absolutely free of charge. Just visit howtofascinate.com/you and use the code “bbg19” and you’re on your way!

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Be accessible by finding the box you fit in, but then be different from everybody else in it.
  • Highlight what you are not as a way of differentiating yourself.
  • Finding your difference simply takes emphasizing something you already possess naturally.
  • Ironically, we try to copy others when we already have a unique DNA.
  • Competition consists of those who are smarter, cheaper, more famous, and more loved.
  • Point out to your clients how you are the antithesis of your competition.
  • Sally’s assessment differentiates itself through reading public image rather than personality.
  • Higher-income earners don’t offer a different service so much as put a unique spin on it.
  • People who are almost irrationally passionate are the ones who change the world.
  • Some lack passion and others lack methods, but some lack both.
  • The thing you care the most about is the thing which differentiates you.
  • If you don’t solve a problem, you don’t have a personal brand.
  • Make the problem you solve feel incredibly big and scary to your clients.
